Godly or Worldly Ambition?

Ambition is often viewed with suspicion in Christian circles. We sometimes wonder if pursuing big goals or striving for excellence might reflect pride or worldly thinking. But the real issue is not whether we are ambitious—the real question is what or who our ambition is ultimately for.

Scripture reminds us that we must regularly examine ourselves before the Lord. Hebrews encourages believers to practice thoughtful self-examination, allowing God’s Word to search and shape our motives. The same outward actions can come from very different hearts. Two people might pursue the same career or leadership opportunity—yet one may be motivated by personal recognition, while the other desires to serve others and glorify God.

The Bible consistently directs our focus upward. “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:2, ESV). Jesus adds in Matthew 6:33, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” When our ultimate aim is God’s glory, ambition becomes a tool for kingdom impact. As Paul reminds us, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

So how can we align our ambition with God’s purposes?

First, delight in the Lord and ask Him to shape your desires. “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).

Second, seek wise counsel from mentors and trusted believers who can help you examine your motives.

Third, move forward in faith and courage, using the gifts God has given you to serve Him boldly.

Ambition becomes godly when our hearts are fixed on God’s glory, our minds are set on things above, and our efforts are aimed at advancing His kingdom. Let’s pursue our calling with wisdom, humility, and courage—for His glory.
