Follow Your Heart To Find Purpose?

“Follow your heart.”

It sounds inspiring. But is it wise? Not at all.

In a culture that constantly tells us to look inward for purpose, Scripture gently but clearly redirects us. “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:2, ESV). Purpose doesn’t begin with self-discovery. It begins with knowing God.

We often ask, What am I supposed to do with my life? But a better first question is, Do I know the One who gave me life? Jeremiah reminds us that the heart is deceitful. Left unanchored, it drifts. Yet Psalm 37:4 gives us hope: “Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” As we delight in Him, He reshapes our desires. He aligns our ambitions with His purposes.

Our ultimate purpose is already settled. Isaiah tells us we were created for God’s glory. The Westminster Shorter Catechism puts it beautifully: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” We are most joyful and satisfied when we glorify Him with our lives.

So what do we do? We take small, faithful steps.
  • Pray five minutes a day.
  • Read one chapter of Scripture daily.
  • Schedule a meal with a mentor and ask how God led them.

Instead of following our heart, we ask God to form our heart. As we seek Him, trust Him, and walk faithfully, He leads — often in ways greater than we could imagine.
