Gospel Freedom: Two Liberating Truths

​Though newspaper headlines around the world may lead one to believe that all news is bad news, there is an old story of timeless truths worth relating and celebrating. It’s the simply yet profound story of the gospel. Here are two truths, two facets, of the great headline of history.

Truth 1: We can’t. The truth that we can’t do anything to earn a right standing before God is liberating. It means we can get off the religious treadmill of trying to measure up to impossible standards we set for ourselves (or have allowed others to set for us). It means we can be honest with ourselves and others. We can be the broken people that we are and stop trying to fix ourselves. We can’t.

Truth 2: God did. The truth that God made a way for salvation through the cross-work of Jesus is liberating. It means God can be just and the justifier of those who have faith in Jesus. It means God can look on us and see the righteousness of Christ. It means God does not condemn us as His enemy but embraces us as children. It means we can be the broken people that we are because God came to fix the broken and heal the sick.
These truths liberate us to know, love, and serve God with joy because our striving is not for grace but from grace. This is good news!
